(From Jim Eisenstein) – On June 12, the Boalsburg Farmers Market at the PA Military Museum will sponsor a free “Learning Kitchen” from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Learning Kitchen features two prominent local chefs preparing dishes using ingredients from market vendors. Mark Johnson, chef at the Elk Creek Café, will demonstrate quick pickling techniques for fresh vegetables and methods for brining inexpensive cuts of meat (like pork bellies) found at farmers markets.
Grace Pilato, an accomplished chef and teacher of popular cooking classes, will show how to make goat milk ricotta cheese with seasonal herbs to go with pasta and how to make a variety of pestos. Seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and copies of the chefs’ recipes will be available.
Of course, there will be the usual full array of fine products available, including seasonal favorites like strawberries, pea pods, broccoli, carrots, lettuces and salad mix, and lots more. The market is open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and at 4:00 p.m., Picker and Papa will play and sing old favorites. Parking is free, ample, and convenient.
